What does the phrase “Let it rain” mean?

This is the translation of the motto “Pula” on the coat of arms of the African country of Botswana. Partially occupied by the sands of the Kalahari Desert, the country suffers from droughts, and the swampy lowlands in the Okavango River valley turn into a huge system of lakes during the rainy season.

The tribes living in this territory are not always friendly to each other, this provokes numerous conflicts between the aborigines.

About 18% of the entire country’s territory is occupied by nature reserves and national parks, one of which is home to the world's largest population of elephants.

The capital of Botswana is the city of Gaborone. Botswana is rich in many minerals, primarily diamonds.

A little more about the benefits and expressions in everyday life

If an article on the topic “Cool expressions for any occasion” will motivate at least someone not to resort to various chemical doping just to cope with negative impact stress, which means it was not written in vain.

Certainly, constant stress- an unpleasant thing, but you can and should learn to cope with it without medications. Is it difficult? Not really. It will be difficult only at the very beginning. These difficulties can especially affect those who have already become dependent on some chemical substances.

If we're talking about about drug addiction or advanced alcoholism, in order to overcome the addiction, you will most likely have to consult a narcologist.

However, most readers do not fall into this demographic. This means you can train your own mind to successfully cope with stress. To achieve this goal without serious difficulties, you need to learn how to switch from what upsets you to the exact opposite moments. It won't be long before you notice that achieving this goal is not difficult at all. The main thing here is not to let yourself get wound up!

After all, if someone from your environment behaves rudely, it is his problem, not yours. Why waste your energy on other people's problems? And even if you were wrong: what will the hassle and bitter tears give? Isn't it better to just draw the right conclusions and not repeat past missteps and mistakes?

The media will rain down a barrage of negative news on us in an endless stream. And what does this give? Will there be fewer wars? Will planes stop crashing? All drivers and pedestrians will learn to follow the rules traffic? Unfortunately, all these questions can be considered rhetorical. Therefore, you still shouldn’t worry too much about everything that the media brings down on us. Let's live in harmony with our nervous system. And constant stress has never prolonged anyone’s health!

Therefore, the only thing that can really help us is the correct attitude towards everything that happens both in the world around us and directly in our lives. It is easier to endure any difficulties in a calm state of mind. And the best helpers in the constant fight against stress, apathy, depression and constant fear- we ourselves. The ability to control your own consciousness, to have cool phrases and expressions in stock is one of the types of positive survival.

Continue to look at your life with a smile, endure difficulties with a cool head and notice the positive aspects in any situation. And most importantly - stop worrying about trifles! Life loves those who take it easy! And then everything in your life will be just wonderful!

Well, I accept the challenge. Although I have been translating from and into English for several years, I am primarily a technical translator, so such exercise for the mind will be very useful, since I have not encountered idioms, proverbs and sayings since my college days.

But first, a little theory.

IN lately There is a certain regression in science in general and in linguistics in particular. Belief in long-disproven astrology has been revived, and there is talk of non-existent torsion fields, people blindly believe in power and at the same time are afraid of hypnosis, NLP, zombies. In linguistics there is the same problem. Rollback to the so-called " folk etymology"is observed in the speeches of M.N. Zadornov, in the books of Dragunkin. The above-mentioned comrades, trying to prove the origin of all languages from Russian, are looking for foreign words consonant with the Russians. For example, in one of Dragunkin’s books, the word “dollar” is raised to the Russian word “share”: a gold bar was divided into shares (chopped into shares - this is where the word “ruble” comes from, i.e. chopped off). At first glance, everything is logical, dollar = ruble. But there is no need to compare modern languages, and ancient, and the etymology of the word dollar is well known and documented. In the 16th century, in the Czech city of Joachimsthal (which means “Valley of Joachim,” one of the German princes), coins were issued that were called “Joachimstallers.” The name was unpronounceable, so in Germany this word was shortened to “thaler”, and in Rus' the word “efimok” came from it, and in Dutch and English it turned into “dollar”.

But for the amusement of the public, wanting to emphasize national exclusivity, comrade comedians distort words and mislead the unenlightened public. But there is nothing new under the sun: even in the time of Lomonosov, the then “linguists” argued that the word “Norway” comes from the Russian word “Naverkhiya”, and “Italy” - from “Udalia”.
The debate about which language is richer is an endless debate. Which language is richer: one that has two cases (English), six (Russian), nineteen (Eskimo) or none (Chinese)? Most words in English(this fact, alas, is undeniable), but Russian is richer in the use of prefixes and suffixes. There are Russian words that are expressed in English in two words, for example “house” - small house, and vice versa - fish - “to catch fish”, fetch - “to go and bring”. Therefore, in my opinion, the reasoning that my language is richer and some is poorer is based on elementary ignorance.

As for the translation...
Vladimir Petrovich suggests translating sayings and idioms literally. FOR WHAT?! WHO DOES THIS?!
I suggest you literally translate the English idioms:
1. Little and sweet
2. Caution is the parent of safety
3. A cat may look at the king

(1. Lit. “small and sweet” - the spool is small, but expensive; 2. Lit. “Caution is the parent of safety” - God protects the careful; 3. Lit. “a cat can look at the king” - and we are not blindsided. )
Or Azerbaijani sayings (I write in Russian letters):
1. Eli ashindan da oldu, Vali ashindan da
2. Guzusuna gyimayan kabab yeye bilmez
(1. Liter. “he lost a cup of Ali’s pilaf and a cup of Vali’s pilaf” - if you chase two hares, you won’t catch either one 2. Liter. “if you feel sorry for the lamb, you won’t be able to fry the kebab” - he who doesn’t take risks, doesn’t drink champagne).

For the English, it rains like cats and dogs, for us it pours like buckets; We get wet to the skin, the British - to the skin. There are many such examples.

I am sure that any language can have its own comedian who will laugh at the “stupid Russians” who literally translate their idioms. Idioms and sayings CANNOT be translated literally; it is necessary to select the appropriate EQUIVALENT. (I refer everyone to the books: E. Vartanyan. Journey into the word, L. Uspensky. The Word about Words, Y. Otkupshchikov. To the origins of the word, A. Leontyev. Journey along the linguistic map of the world - all these books are written for children, so they anyone far from linguistics will understand. You can also see that Soviet schoolchildren knew more about the language than modern “linguists” who make the next “sensational” discoveries).

Now, actually, the translation.
I do not promise to translate all phrases quickly and immediately. I'll start gradually.
1. “No, probably” - first you need to understand this phrase in Russian. The speaker refuses something with a hint of doubt. “No”, but sort of “yes”, but more likely “no”, but if you persuade, then maybe “yes”. This is such a complex connotation.
If you type “yes no, probably” into a search engine, you will see that this is how the title of the film “Definitely, maybe” was translated into Russian. In my opinion, this is significant: it turns out that the Saxon mind can combine incompatible concepts!

I would translate the phrase “No, probably” differently depending on the context: if there is more doubt in the voice, I would say “Maybe, not!”, but if the refusal is more decisive, I would say “Not really!”. Or I would use English neologism“Nyeh” is a combination of “No” and “Yeh”, and is used in such cases.
2. Damn it! - what the dickens!
3. As the saying goes

This is what came to mind “offhand”, right away. I promise to eventually translate all the phrases proposed by Mr. Rubtsov. Dear readers! I suggest you also leave “punching” phrases, such as “to soak in the toilet”, etc. I also invite all translators to leave their translation options. After all, we were challenged!
