"To you!" Vladimir Mayakovsky

To you, who live behind the orgy orgy,
having a bathroom and a warm closet!
Shame on you about those presented to George
read from newspaper columns?

Do you know, many mediocre,
those who think it’s better to get drunk how -
maybe now the leg bomb
tore Petrov's lieutenant away?..

If he is brought to slaughter,
suddenly I saw, wounded,
how you have a lip smeared in a cutlet
lustfully humming the Northerner!

Is it for you, who love women and dishes,
give your life for pleasure?!
I'd rather be at the bar... I'll be
serve pineapple water!

Analysis of Mayakovsky's poem "To you!"

Vladimir Mayakovsky was an ardent supporter revolutionary ideas, believing that society needs a good shake-up. It is possible to understand the young poet, who very early learned what poverty and lack of a roof over his head were. Watching how his acquaintances from the gymnasium, and then from the art school, led a secular lifestyle, squandering their parents’ fortunes, Mayakovsky experienced a feeling of resentment mixed with disgust. Having matured, the poet was surprised to notice that among the fans of his literary talent there were also more and more representatives of the so-called “golden youth” - people without goals and life principles, accustomed to spending time idly.

In 1915, Mayakovsky dedicated his poem to them entitled “To You!”, in which he denounces all those who waste their lives in vain, looking for joy and dreaming of delicious food. It was during this period that Russia suffered defeat in the First World War, sending trains with half-starved and deprived of weapons soldiers to the front. Meanwhile, their more successful and wealthy peers were having fun at balls and coming up with new ways to while away the long evenings. gambling or a bottle of good wine. Addressing them, Mayakovsky begins his accusatory speech with reproaches, trying to appeal to his opponents to their conscience. “Aren’t you ashamed to read about those presented to George from the columns of newspapers?!” In this case we're talking about about soldiers awarded the Cross of St. George - one of the most significant awards in pre-revolutionary Russia. And Mayakovsky is sincerely outraged by people who are trying to find out who received the next award, and whether someone he knows is on the list.

At the same time, the poet understands that the St. George Cross is given for special merits, and that at that moment, while curious idle readers are looking through the newspapers, someone is giving their life for them at the front. However, such thoughts do not even occur to those who are not ready to sacrifice even a small part of their comfortable existence for the sake of their own homeland. Mayakovsky is convinced that “those who have a bathroom and a warm closet” will never care about the grief of others, and all their patriotic pathos can only be reduced to quoting particularly successful passages from the poems of Igor Severyanin.

In front of such an audience, narcissistic and pompous, who simply don’t know how else to please themselves, Mayakovsky refuses to read his works, categorically declaring: “I’d rather serve pineapple water to whores in a bar!”

Read the verse “To you!” Mayakovsky Vladimir Vladimirovich can be found on the website. The poem was written in 1915, when Russia was drawn into the First World War. In obedience to military duty, echelons of Russian soldiers were sent to the front. The writer Mikhail Bulgakov and the poet Nikolai Gumilyov went to the front. Vladimir Mayakovsky also signed up as a volunteer, but for reasons of “unreliability” he was not sent to the field.

Another part of the youth remained in a prosperous environment with a “warm closet and bath” and spent their lives in laziness and idleness. The poet is outraged by the indifferent cynicism of ordinary people, among whom are his former schoolmates. They spend their lives having fun in drinking establishments, playing cards, dancing at balls. Representatives of the intellectual part of the youth are familiar with world and Russian poetry, attend literary salons, and among them there are fans of the futurist poet Mayakovsky. They honor themselves as patriots, discuss the current course of the war and quote Igor Severyanin. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Petrov’s leg is torn off by a bomb, and thousands of ordinary soldiers are used as “cannon fodder” and led to slaughter. For those who remain far from the gunpowder smoke and casually read the “newspaper columns”, looking for those awarded in the lists St. George's Cross familiar names, - the poet throws his angry accusation. He is bitterly aware of the injustice of the world, the meaninglessness of war, when people's lives are disposed of for the sake of incomprehensible political ambitions. The poet agrees to serve at a bar, serving pineapple juice, rather than give his life for the sake of the well-fed well-being of worthless representatives of the “golden youth”.

Yesterday, July 19, was the birthday of Vladimir Mayakovsky, the famous Soviet poet, whose poems you rarely hear now, since for the current “bourgeois” government, Mayakovsky is a direct enemy and hater. Here we go memorable date- 119 years (next year the anniversary is 120 years) since the birth of the poet, no one has announced anywhere in the media. Thank God, today there are caring people among Internet bloggers who remember and love the poetry of this undoubtedly extraordinary poet-innovator, but, at the same time, also a poet - a reverent romantic who experienced throughout his life unrequited love for a woman who was close to him , and at the same time infinitely far from the most tragic death.
Personally, the poems of the early, young Mayakovsky are very close to me in spirit, the poems of a daring rebel and overthrower of the unjust power of the bourgeoisie of those tsarist times.
Here, for example, is the famous poem “To You!”, written and published in 1915, at the height of the First World War. Imagine a small cozy cafe in one of the dacha suburbs of Petrograd, at the tables there is a respectable audience - ladies in white fluffy dresses and wide-brimmed hats, men in frock coats and bowler hats. A tall, healthy young guy in a wide bright yellow blouse comes out onto the small stage of the cafe and begins to read poetry in a thunderous bass voice:

To you,

living behind an orgy orgy,

Having a bathroom and a warm closet...

Shame on you

about those presented to “George”

Read from newspaper columns!

Did you know

mediocre, many

Those who think it's better to get drunk,

Maybe now the bomb legs

Petrov's lieutenant was torn out!

And if he

brought to slaughter

I suddenly saw, wounded,

How are you

lip smeared in the cutlet,

Lustfully humming Northerner...

Is it for you, who love women and dishes,

Igor Severyanin "Doesn't mean yet..."

Doesn't mean being a traitor
Be joyful and young
Without causing pain to prisoners
And slowly into the shrapnel smoke...

Go to the theater, cinemas,
Write poetry, buy a dressing table,
And a lot of tenderness and kindness
Include it in a letter to your loved one.

Walk along Morskaya with brown-haired women,
Making wreaths from chrysanthemums,
Still drink cream and foam
And eat cream for dessert -

Doesn’t mean yet... Get rid of despondency
And poisonous blues!
War is war. But the eyes are blue,
Turn blue tomorrow like yesterday!

War is war. And roses are roses.
Poems - in verses. Dreams - dreams.
We live by laughter! alive with dreams!
And if we are alive, we are strong!

Hearts are strengthened in the desire to live...
Live, hope and be silent...
When will it be our turn,
We will exchange flowers for swords!
